Jean Blackwell works at Fadledean, a Ministry of Defence research station. Involved in a new project, her work with a chimpanzee named Charlie involves research into biological warfare. But security there is severely compromised when, alone on duty, Jean falls down in a faint. And despite Fadledean's strict safety regime, Charlie is able to make his escape from the station. The chimpanzee, having been injected with plague bacilli, will become highly infectious after a three-week incubation period. Now, the hunt is on for Charlie.
